Landscaping Design for Ottawa’s Four Seasons
Ottawa goes from -30°C winters to 30°C summers, and we plan every project around that calendar. In spring, we wait until the frost is fully out of the clay before we dig, because working wet clay soil compacts it and ruins drainage for years. Summer is build season for patios, driveways, and retaining walls, with every base compacted to handle the freeze-thaw cycles ahead. Fall is the best time of year for sod, aeration, and fertilizer, when warm soil and cool air help roots establish before winter. And every hardscape we build sits on 8 to 12 inches of compacted granular base, so it stays flat while the ground around it heaves and settles.
After hundreds of projects across Ottawa, we know exactly what this climate does to a yard, and we build for it from day one. Let’s talk about yours.

Frequently asked questions
What makes landscaping in Ottawa different from other cities?
Ottawa’s climate presents unique challenges, including freezing winters, spring thaw, heavy snowfall, and clay soil in many neighbourhoods. What should Ottawa homeowners consider before investing in a new landscape?
Before starting a landscaping project, it’s important to think about how you’ll use your outdoor space, your long-term maintenance preferences, drainage requirements, sun exposure, and your overall budget. We take the time to understand your goals and recommend solutions that suit your property, lifestyle, and investment.
What is the difference between hardscaping and landscaping?
Landscaping includes all the elements that create a functional and attractive outdoor space. Hardscaping refers to permanent features like interlock patios, walkways, retaining walls, driveways, and outdoor kitchens. Softscaping includes living elements such as lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs, and plants. Most successful landscape projects combine both to create a balanced outdoor environment.
How can landscaping improve property value?
Professional landscaping can improve curb appeal, increase usable outdoor living space, enhance drainage, and make a property more attractive to potential buyers. Features like interlock patios, walkways, garden beds, retaining walls, and well-planned planting can add lasting value while making your home more enjoyable for everyday living.
Do you provide landscape design before construction?
Yes. Every project begins with a consultation to understand your vision, budget, and the unique characteristics of your property. Depending on the scope of work, we can provide design recommendations and layout planning before construction begins, ensuring every detail is carefully considered before work starts.
Do you handle permits if required?
Some landscaping projects may require permits, depending on the scope of work and local municipal requirements. If permits are needed, we’ll let you know during the planning stage and guide you through the process. Our goal is to ensure your project meets all applicable regulations before construction begins.
